Thank you for your interest in working at the King Mountain Ranch Resort, we are always looking for good people to add to our staff …especially now as we get ready for our next season.   Here at KMR we strive to provide our guests with impeccable service and rely on you to help us achieve our goals.   Our staff is one of our most important assets here at the ranch.   We will treat you with honesty, dignity, and respect and expect the same in return.

 We are a bit different than some of the other dude ranches you may be considering.  Our philosophy is not just welcoming quests to our home, we are welcoming guests to their vacation resort.   We work around their timetable, not asking them to work around ours.  Flexibility is our middle name.  We expect our employees to be very flexible, if your not that is okay, this is probably is not the position for you.

 We are looking for employees that are warm, and outgoing.  Please have have strong communication and interpersonal skills. They must not be afraid of long hours and hard work. Employees must be willing to take initiative and be able to follow rules and regulations.  Employees must get along well with others, work well as part of a team, and must have a flexible attitude. 

No matter what position you are hired for, we expect all crew to be willing to help out in other departments.   A server may be needed in the barn or the kids program one day.  Conversely, it’s not uncommon that a wrangler be asked to help in the dining room.  We are a team and a team is expected to help each other and we do.  The days are long and the work is hard, but we promise you the experience will create memories to last a lifetime.  

Our minimum hiring age is 18.  We are a drug free environment. 

 Working at the Ranch:

We are not going to tell you how to run your life, but we are going to tell you want is acceptable and permissible here at KMR. Our staff creates a community, and to be part of this community you have to pledge to respect your coworkers, our guests and the ranch itself.  Our staff is one of our most important assets, and we are all here to serve our guests.   

Availability:

Our season starts on Memorial Day weekend and ends at the end of September and sometimes in October.  Candidates that can start around mid May and stay until the end of August or September will be given first consideration.  If you can work longer or shorter, please still submit an application there are some positions that run longer and we also sometimes hire a few people a shorter time.  

Compensation:

 Compensation is slightly complicated. It consists of hourly pay, and tips as well as the value of lodging and meals. Staff members are paid on an hourly basis and wages range from $7.50 per hour to $10.50 per hour.  The value of the lodging and meals are deducted from your pay.  At our ranch we pool all of the tips and are equally distributed to all employees; it takes all of us to run the ranch successfullyTips are discretionary by the guests and the better guest service we can provide to them whether it is fantastic food, a great ride, or exceptional room service, the better the tips!  Tips will be collected and distributed on your next paycheck, no waiting until the end of the season.  

 Some positions are a 5 day work week and some may be shorter days, but a 6 day week.   Schedules will be based on a 40 hr work week.  You will certainly have plenty of time to play and enjoy your surroundings.   Overtime work is available during our busy weeks and it is expected everyone pitch in. 

 In addition to the pay portion of your compensation package, all staff members are welcome to use all the ranch facilities and activities. 

·        We also provide housing and 3 meals a day.  Snacks are also in the fridge if you get hungry at night.  

·        When you are not working you are welcome to go on a horseback ride, shoot at one of our ranges, or fish in our pond or lake

·        We offer free wireless internet, so you are welcome to bring your laptop

·        We provide satellite TV in both the Men and Women’s dorms and the Employee Dining Room (EDR), and yes the movie channels are provided also

·        Each dorm and the EDR have a phone and we also provide free long distance 

Appearance and Expectations:

We are a western resort and our guests have certain expectations.  We expect our crew to present a neat – “clean cut” appearance at all times.   A few items to consider before applying

·        Men are expected to be clean shaved every day.  Facial hair is permissible if you had it before you got here.   Please don’t try to grow it here.

·        Uniforms will be provided for all departments

·        Wranglers are expected to have a cowboy hat and boots on for every shift, long sleeves and jeans in good condition.   

·        Long hair is discouraged on men, but if accepted it must be pulled back

·        The bottom line is, plan to look like cowboys and cowgirls 

·        Foul language will not be tolerated

·        Drugs will not be tolerated

·        Facial piercing are not allowed 

Housing:

We provide housing for our staff of 40, so count on having a roommate.   Both dorms have a common area that you can enjoy.  We provide one set of sheets and bedding, but we highly suggest you bring your own towels.  

Transportation:

Having you own vehicle is not required but it does make it easier to get off the ranch on your days off.  Travel to our ranch is your responsibility.  We are located 17 miles northwest of Granby, Colorado. Granby is served by Amtrak.   Additionally, a shuttle service is available from the Denver airport to Granby.  The ranch can arrange for your pick-up in Granby.  Of course, you may also drive if you wish.  

Staff Positions Available for Summer 2008

 Wranglers

Positions Available:  6/9

 Our wranglers are at the core of our program here at the ranch.  We are looking for individuals with extensive horsemanship skills, very outgoing, willing to teach, and can take control of a situation in an emergency.   Just because you have ridden for a many years does not mean that you can be a wrangler.   Our guests are primarily novices and it’s the wrangler’s job to teach, make sure everything is safe, and insure our guests have a wonderful time while with our horses.  

All of our wranglers will also be responsible for care of all tack, cleaning the barn and corral areas, mending fences, replacing log fence rails, and doctoring all livestock.  We also have to work about 75 horses in the spring and re-evaluate the horse’s level each year.   You will also be required to work horses when not doing other duties to insure they have not learned any bad habits.  

Qualifications:

  • Experience with horses is absolutely required, trail experience is highly desired
  • Experience drive a team is a plus but not required
  • Knowledge of roping and a willingness to teach that to others is a plus
  • Must be willing to learn.  There are many ways to work with horses and we are not saying that our way is the best, but you will be required to do many things our way…with that said we are always open to hearing new ideas and techniques. 

 Wrangler in Training/Ranch Hand

Positions Available: 3/3 

If you don’t have the experience to be one of our wranglers, you may consider applying to be a Wrangler in Training and accept a ranch hand position.   A ranch hand here at our ranch has many duties and we are looking for a few individuals that are willing to do whatever it takes.  

A typical day for a ranch hand starts helping in the barn at 6am bringing in the herd from one of our pastures.   Then all the horses that will be used that day need to be groomed, grained, checked over, and saddled.   After that is done (about 8am) its time for breakfast and the rest of the day.   Your duties will vary each day, it could be mowing the lawn, painting, cutting wood, fixing fence, doing a town run, moving luggage in for guests, etc… you get the picture.     

You will also be the first called on if we need an extra wrangler or extra activities person.   So we are looking for people that have a range of skills, horses, shooting, and fishing.   If you’re an outdoors person but don’t have lots of experience for our barn or activities department than this is the job for you.

 Kids Counselors

Positions available: 2/3

 We are looking for three fun, patient, trustworthy, kid loving individuals.    Our kids program, called the Fox’s Den, is geared for our guests that are from the ages of 4-10.    A typical day would entail arts and crafts time, swimming, a scavenger hunt, hiking, fishing, and of course horseback riding.   The ideal candidates are willing to prepare a daily schedule of activities to include the items above and much more.    

Qualifications:

·        Some knowledge of horses a plus but not required

·        Occasionally there is an opportunity to make a little bit of money babysitting for some of our young guests

·        Must be willing to agree to a background check

·        Having experience with children – please state experiences in your application 

Activities

Positions Available: 1/3 

Our broad range of activities is one of the big selling points of our ranch.   The activity department is responsible for our skeet and trap range, sporting clay range, rifle range, guided hiking, guided fishing, organizing our family game activities.    They are also responsible for care and maintenance of equipment for the volley ball court, tennis courts, basketball and various lawn games.  

The ideal candidates possess knowledge and experience in one or more of the activities listed above.   You will be teaching our guests, so please insure you are qualified in these activities before applying.

 We would love to find an experienced shooting instructor and fly fishing instructor.

 Housekeeping

Positions Available: 0/3

 Our housekeeping department is responsible for the cleanliness of our guest rooms and the rest of the buildings on the property.   We have 33 rooms and a large 8 bedroom house.   Our rooms are cleaned everyday as is the rest of the public areas.   This is a position for a detail oriented person that is OK with a little hard work.   Our buildings are 3 to 4 stories, so walking and plenty of stairs are involved.   We also wash all of our own laundry so plan on several hours of washing and folding each day.  

Our housekeeping positions aren’t easy, but it’s some of the best schedules on the ranch.   You don’t have to start until about 8:30 and we are typically done for the day by 4pm.  There is a rotating late shift but you would only have to do that once every few days.     So while the job is demanding, you get plenty of free time.

 Maintenance/Grounds

Positions Available: 2/3 Skilled 1/3 Unskilled 

 For ease we have combined these two positions in this job posting, but in fact they are a bit different.   We are looking for both experienced maintenance employees and general labor and grounds crew.     We will be working on some major construction projects before and after our season.   If you have experience in framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, etc. please apply.  But we are also looking for those interested in learning some of these trades and those that are willing to fill our labor positions.   Bottom line is having positions available for both skilled and unskilled maintenance folks.

Dining and Bar

            Positions Available: 1/4

 We are looking for a few energetic and personal individuals to serve our guests 3 meals per day.  Our breakfast is either served cooked to order or a buffet, depending on guest count.   Lunch is the same way but often is served buffet.  Dinner is 3 courses, salad course, main entree and dessert.  Our servers need to create a fun and casual environment while provide a very high level of service.   Prior serving experience a plus but is not required.    We do have a full liquor license so some knowledge of drinks and wine service is a plus but we will teach you if necessary.  

We are also looking for an experienced bartender; our bar is more like a relaxed lounge not a busy local bar.   We are looking for someone that has done some bartending before, and had a good working knowledge of drink preparation.   Again, this job is not making car bombs and flaming shooters; we are looking for someone that can make a martini, a margarita or simple mixed drinks.   And you will me making plenty of Shirley Temples and Roy Rogers for our younger guests.  

Office Staff

Positions Available: 2/3

 General Office Staff Position

Our office is the nerve center of the entire operations.  We are looking for a couple of people that have various office skills, but most important have strong communication skills.   The office staff is responsible for generating daily operational reports from our reservations software, checking guests in and out, fielding incoming calls, taking reservations and general office administration work.

 

Sales and reservations position

This may be the same person as above, but we are also looking for a sales and reservations person.   Prior sales experience is desirable.   We very often book reservations throughout our season and we are looking for someone that has strong verbal and written communication skills.   Many of our leads come from email and an equal amount come from inbound phone calls.     This position requires someone that is self motivated, is excited about working with new guest inquiries, and has a desire to convert those inquiries to bookings.

 

General Office Staff/ Assistant to the General Manager

This position is about 60 percent office work as it relates to guest services and 40 percent assisting the General Manager.   The duties for guest services are above; the duties for assistant to the GM are as follows.   General office/administration work, filing of vendor files, working with some vendors, personnel files and HR duties, and generally assisting with office tasks as it pertains to higher level operations of the business and the expansion of the ranch.   The bottom line is the tasks can be anything related to assisting the GM in performing his duties so he can get out of the office more and interact with guests.   Must have proficient computer skills, Word and Excel experience preferred.  General Knowledge of QuickBooks is a plus.

Kitchen Staff

For our kitchen staff we are looking for experienced cooks only.  If you have worked in a commercial kitchen either on the line, in the pantry, or done prep work and have the desire to work and play in a new environment then we are the place for you.  We are willing to train some, but experience is required.

Breakfast/Lunch Cook

Our breakfast cook will be responsible for prep of our continental breakfast, the employee meal, and then the full service guest meal.  On low guest count day’s guest breakfast will be cooked to order…eggs, omelets, breakfast meats and a rotating menu of specials (French Toast, eggs Benedict, Biscuits and gravy or eggs Florentine).  After breakfast is completed there may be sack lunch to make and then start prep for employee lunch and guest lunch.   The ideal candidate will have experience in a fast pace kitchen and use of egg pans is mandatory.

Lunch/Dinner Cook

Our pm cook will start the day about 11am and help with the lunch rush, then start working on any sauces or time consuming dinner prep.   Then a break and back for the final dinner prep, employee dinner, and work through plating dinner, and of course breaking down the kitchen.   For this position we are looking for someone that has at least a few years experience in a commercial kitchen working on the line.  Strong organizational skills are a must as well as a calm kitchen demeanor under presser.   We have light days and days that we are serving 80 guests and 40 staff all in under two hours.  

Dishwasher/prep

Our dishwasher position is exactly what it sounds like, but even though we are a ranch we do have a commercial dishwashing machine.    This individual schedule can vary depending on guest count and mealtimes.    You will be washing the dishes and the kitchen items, cleaning up after meals, breaking down staff meal, cleaning staff dining room, and cleaning the kitchen (with the rest of the kitchen staff) each night.   If you have an afternoon/evening shift you will normally be the last one out of the kitchen after sweep and mop.   You will also be asked to assist in receiving and put away our food orders.

In addition to dish and cleaning responsibilities you will be asked to help with prep work.  This is an ideal position for someone that wants to gain kitchen experience.   We will train you as much as you want to be trained.   We have past dishwashers that are now sous chef’s at other properties.
